Effectively engaging people: views from the World Social Marketing Conference 2008.

Following on from the success of the World Social Marketing Conference we are delighted to include this new resource on the website. We interviewed many of the keynote speakers who kindly gave their time to provide us with their thoughts on social marketing. The resource provides an interesting mix of opinion as well as recommendations for further reading and some evaluation of the National Social Marketing Centre’s benchmark criteria. We hope you enjoy the resource.

Delegates from across the world came together to network, learn and share their knowledge and expertise at the first World Social Marketing Conference in Brighton.

The event, opened by Philip Kotler on Monday 29 September (pictured), saw a diverse range of keynotes, presentations and workshops on a whole raft of behavioural challenges, from sanitation programmes and sustainable travel initiatives, to fear campaigns and civic engagement.

Alan Milburn opened the Conference on Tuesday 30 September making the case for social marketing becoming a core part of the public policy-making arsenal. His talk was followed by a debate on the differences and similarities between health promotion and social marketing and a discussion on climate change and what individuals and organisations can do to make a difference. The Conference was closed by Bill Smith and Alan Andreasen with differing presentations on the future of social marketing.

We have already had a number of comments back from delegates about the conference and the conference evaluation form can be accessed here.

‘I just wanted to thank you for an awesome conference… …You set a new standard each time it runs…. It was brilliantly imagined and delivered. Outstanding quality.
For me it was a bit like hunting for diamonds…..great people, great ideas, great case studies…'

'Just a note to say thank you to all your team on the Social Marketing Conference. It was a great event. A great spur and wonderful insights that will make a big difference to what we do in the NHS.'

'I am now determined to make products, not advice!'

This conference website will provide a full record of the conference with the keynote presentations available to download from here. Audio recordings of the presentations will be available from Monday 13th October, the same day as the breakout session presentations will be available.

A big thank you to all the delegates, speakers, poster presenters, exhibitors and sponsors who made the first World Social Marketing Conference such a success. We will keep you posted about the next World Conference in 2010!
